What equipment/uniform do I need to provide for my player?

  • Uniform Jersey (U7 age group and above)
  • Soccer cleats (not required under 8 but recommended)
  • Ball
  • Shin guards
  • Water bottle

Players in the Recreational league purchase their own jersey and socks at Sterling Soccer.  Black shorts are preferred for all age groups but REQUIRED for the SFL age groups - U11 thru U19.  Travel teams will provide information on uniforms thru the team manager.  Players in the Me and My Ball program and the U6 age group are provided with a Reston T-shirt and the jersey is not required.

Every player in Reston Soccer must bring a soccer ball to practices.  It's a good idea to mark the ball with the player's name and telephone number.  Ball sizes are as follows:

  • #3 ball for players in U5, U6, U7 and U8 age groups
  • #4 ball for players in U9, U10, U11 and U12 age groups
  • #5 ball for players in U13 and above

Every player (U6 and above) must wear shin guards at practices and games!  It's soccer law!

WHAT DOES THAT "U" MEAN IN MY LEAGUE ASSIGNMENT?

Do you find your child's league assignment confusing? Well, it may be but we will try to clarify it. First, the "U" means "under," so if your child is assigned to U10, which means the "Under 10 league." There are ‘B’ -boys (may be mixed boys and girls) and sometimes also referred to as COED) and "G" (all girls only) leagues.

Participation in any league is determined by a range of birth dates based on the VYSA guidelines. Because VYSA determines the age ranges, this may be a conflict with the Fairfax County school cut off dates and your child may be in a different age group than his school peers.  In these cases, you can request that your child play up to an age group to be with their school classmates.  Each age group commissioner reviews all requests to play up and will determine if the player is eligible and qualified.

The current list of age group birth date ranges is posted each season on the Registration Page of the website.  The age groups move once a year in the Fall season, so if your player is in U6 in the fall, they will also be U6 in the Spring season, then move up to U7 in the next Fall season.

CAN MY CHILD "PLAY UP" or "DOWN"?

Players are not encouraged to play up in the House Leagues.  Approval of  requests are at the discretion of the League Commissioners for the age groups.

Players are usually prohibited from playing down an age group, however exceptions are granted generally for medical or health reasons.

How do I know what age group my player is in to register?

Age group eligibility is determined by the VYSA guidelines on the Registration Page.

You do not need to select an age group, the registration system will determine the players correct age group based on the birth date entered.  If you are using the paper registration form, the age group ranges are on the back of  the form.

When do the teams play?

Specific dates of play for the current season are on the Home Page or Registration page.  For general days of practice and game schedules, review the information for the age groups on the HOUSE Web page.

Where do the teams play?

Practice schedules are not set until registrations are closed and field availability and coaches are determined.   Each season the fields are allocated by Reston Association and Fairfax County in March (spring) and August (Fall season).  Fields cannot be confirmed until this information is received.

When do the age groups change?

Age group eligibility changes in the fall of each year just like school so your player will be in the same age group for the fall and spring season, then move up.  If your player plays with the age group in the fall and you would like to request that they move up in the spring to the next level, discuss this with your coach and the age group commissioner.

What is the difference between House (Recreational) League and Travel league?

Travel soccer is an option for players who are interested in a higher levels of training and competition for soccer development.  These are also called Select teams as the players are chosen from tryout selections and compete for positions on teams within their age groups.  There is most cost involved for travel teams as they will often have a coach and trainer who are compensated for their time and tournament/travel costs for the team to participate in tournaments out of town.  Visit the Travel League page of the RSA website for more details and to see the list of Travel teams in RSA and contact info for each team for more info.
